SUMMARY:George Roberts\, Davington Priory and Faversham's LGBTQ+ history
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Declan Wiffen and Tina Hagger\, as they explore the unk
nown story of Faversham's little known Seed Merchant\, George Roberts of D
avington Priory. Moving to Faversham in 1948\, Roberts sold flower and vege
table seeds to the rich and famous\, including Vita Sackville-West and the
Queen Mother.\nBut his life before Faversham was quite different\, starting
as footman to William Lygon\, 7th Earl Beauchamp\, a once celebrated arist
ocrat\, politician and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Roberts became Beau
champ’s companion and lover\, traveling the world with him\, and instigat
ing one of Britain’s most notorious sexuality scandals\, leading to Beauc
hamp's exile and inspiring elements of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisit
ed. \n \nCome along and hear about Roberts' life\, in Faversham and befor
ehand\, in a talk that will shed light on a local figure that has been forg
otten\, uncovering an interesting chapter of the town's LGBTQ+ history.\nTh
is talk will be at the Old Brewery Store\, Faversham. Doors open at 6.30 wi
th time for you to buy a drink from the bar.\nDue to capacity limitations\,
tickets must be pre booked\, either via our website or at the Visitor Inf
ormation Centre.\nTickets are FREE for Faversham Society members and £5 fo
 r non-members.\nImage credit Declan Wiffen
