Hidden in plain sight: Silk textiles, unexpected contexts
In this fascinating talk, independent scholar and textile specialist Sue Lamberton explores the often-overlooked role of silk textiles in historic documents and books. While many people focus on the handwriting, language, illumination, or seals of manuscripts and charters, Sue reveals how textile elements such as silk cords, seal tag bookmarks and binding materials can offer valuable insights into origin, manufacture and the maker who created it.
Drawing on examples from Faversham’s collection of charters, including twelve seals attached with silk cords, Sue will examine how these surviving textiles can deepen our understanding of the past. With a particular interest in the silkwomen of London, she brings together historical research and practical expertise to uncover the stories hidden within these remarkable textiles.
