Open Gardens & Garden Market Day 2019

June 30, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Faversham Open Gardens & Garden Market Day will be held on Sunday 30th of June 2019, from 10am-5pm. The Garden Market will be open from 10am-4pm.

There are around 30 gardens, several of them new. So if you’ve been before, there’s still lots to see! The gardens are open 10am-5pm.

There are also around 30 market stalls in the garden market in Faversham’s picturesque Market Place. The Garden Market has specialist plants stalls from well-known nurseries and also sells vintage and second-hand garden tools and artefacts, local craft and hand-made foods. It is open from 10am-4pm.

Faversham is a historic market town with over 500 Listed Buildings, many dating back to medieval times. Faversham Open Gardens & Garden Market Day is a chance to see what lies behind the historic houses. Most gardens are within walking distance of each other. This, combined with the Garden Market, gives the town a festival air on the day, with garden visitors exchanging greetings in the streets when they spot each other’s Open Garden handbooks.

The day has been designed to offer an enjoyable day out for families or groups friends – there are plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance and some gardens offer home-made teas.

There is a town ‘meadow’ garden, walled gardens, terrace gardens and several exceptionally small gardens – showing what can be done in a limited space. There are also several community gardens, including the wildlife-friendly and pioneering Abbey Physic Garden, which helps people suffering from physical or mental difficulties. And, as well as gardens behind ancient buildings, there are also new-build gardens.

There will also be an exhibition of vibrant floral watercolours by the well known local artist, Liz Bradley, in the Creek Creative gallery to coincide with the Open Gardens event.

In conjunction with Plastic Free Faversham and highlighting the importance of minimising the use of single-use plastics in gardening, there is a competition to create the best plastic-free pot, hanging basket or window box for children and for adults. Entries will be on display in the market and will be judged by the public and also by Liz Bradley.

Faversham is easy to get to – Faversham station is just over an hour from both London St Pancras and London Victoria. The town is five minutes from junction 6 of the M2, and half an hour from junctions 4 and 2 of the M25, and has good road and rail links to the rest of Kent.

Faversham Open Gardens & Garden Market Day is a Faversham Society event, raising money to help the Society to protect the historic buildings and environment.

Tickets are £6 each or two for £10 (to include one handbook only). Available from May onwards at Faversham Society, the Fleur-de-lis Heritage Centre, 10-11 Preston St, Faversham, Kent ME13 8NS. Also available from The Market Place on 30th June.
